Bob Dylan Installment #2 : “Chronicles”

Bob says all the truth in the world adds up to one big lie. He made me wonder what he means by the truth. Made me wonder what I mean by the truth. The version I cooked up for myself: the truth is any girl’s start-up vision of herself and the heights she tried to ascend, her journey’s strife - and if she falls, to where she ended up - after soaring on thin air - after shoving hard against her actual limits; that’s her sublime beauty, her graceful pathos, Her Truth.

Not - the sunny-day hopes she told other people about back when she was untried.

At one point in Bob’s Chronicles, I just wanted to yank on my pants, grab Sherrie and fly off to New Orleans to pay homage along Soniat Street, not far from Lafayette Cemetery #1.

He might just as well have titled his Chronicles “The Bob Dylan Prayer Book”.

Joe Smolen

Joe C. Smolen, AKA L.W. Smolen is an Oregon Coast writer of insufficiently exaggerated notoriety. Never having been arrested, he lives with his wife Sherrie and the ghost of their black, Standard Poodle Rico Suave in a really pretty good, Prairie Style house they built themselves. Since the Literary Magazine Fleas on the Dog of Kitchener, Ontario has permanently stopped accepting submissions, in order to read L.W. Smolen’s 2021 short fiction, A Real Guy, you are referred to joecsmolen.com. Some of L.W’s other, subsequent short fictions are archived at Olive Tree Review, Ginosko, Cardinal Sins Journal, Wrath Bearing Tree, Wilderness House and etc. Kirkus reviews once interpreted his work favorably.
